MATRIX CHOOSES TYCO TELECOMMUNICATIONS TO CONSTRUCT 1350 KM UNDERSEA FIBER OPTIC CABLE SYSTEM CONNECTING INDONESIA AND SINGAPORE

State-of-the-Art System Will Provide Robust, High Bandwidth Communications to Jakarta, Batam and Pontianak from Singapore

Independent Indonesian telecommunications provider PT NAP Info Lintas Nusa and Tyco Telecommunications, a business unit of Tyco Electronics and an industry pioneer in undersea communications technology, announced today the signing of a contract between NAP Singapore-based affiliate Matrix Networks and Tyco Telecommunications to construct an undersea fiber optic system that will provide high bandwidth connectivity between Jakarta, Batam and Pontianak, Indonesia and Singapore. The system will serve several key Indonesian markets by providing direct access to the international telecommunications gateway via a state-of-the-art undersea fiber optic link.
“Indonesia has a rapidly expanding demand for bandwidth and access to the internet,” explains Jim Schweigert, general manager of Matrix Networks. “The undersea solution we are deploying with Tyco Telecommunications will serve markets that are now underserved and growing with a system that meets our stringent criteria for capacity, robustness and flexibility using advanced, proven technologies.”
The system will be comprised of a 4 fiber pair trunk between Singapore and Jakarta with branches to Batam in the Riau Islands Province, and Pontianak in Kalimantan on the island of Borneo.  The design also facilitates a future connection to Perth, Australia, via a strategically placed undersea branching unit.  Using the key enabling technology of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), the system will have an ultimate capacity to transmit 64 10 Gigabit wavelengths on each fiber pair for a total bandwidth of nearly 2.6 Terabits.
“Regional systems require the same scalability and reliability as trans-oceanic systems, in an economic package,” says Rob Munier, managing director for global solutions at Tyco Telecommunications. “The system we are building with Matrix will deploy the latest generation of equipment (G3) which features small form factor and highly efficient transmission equipment; reducing both capital and operating expenditures without compromising performance.”
Tyco Telecommunications expects to deliver the system to Matrix in mid-2008.
